THERE are no plans to turn the Fiji Democracy and Freedom Movement into a political party once democracy is restored in Fiji.

FDFM president Usaia Waqatairewa said the current constitution would be amended to include a “sunset clause” to wind up the movement once its aims are achieved.

“FDFM considers itself a bi-partisan movement set up to fight for the restoration of democracy in Fiji. It is similar to umbrella trade union bodies such as the Fiji Trades Union Congress or the Fiji Islands Council of Trade Unions,” he said.

“It also does not consider itself a political movement fighting for a certain form of ideology, apart from the restoration of democracy and human rights, if those could be called ideologies.”

Waqatairewa said once a caretaker government was set up in Fiji and charged with returning the country to an election as soon as possible, “people will return to their various political persuasions to help their parties fight the general election”. – fiji uncensored
